About us:

The time goes well back into the Enpo period (1673-1681) when our great predecessor Genbee Yamamoto established Yamamoto Honke in 1677 in Fushimi, Kyoto. As Fushimi (伏見) well described by its name, the area has been enriched with underground water (伏し水) which spreads throughout the region. With the region’s rich culture and clear water known as Shiragikui* (白菊水 Water of White Chrysanthemum ), one of the best water in the area, Genbee benefitted greatly from this location in brewing tasteful sake. In honor of all the predecessors, Yamamoto family has been passing down the name, Genbee Yamamoto, to company’s successor.

Our History:

1986 Disastrous war between Toba and Fushimi which occurred in the night of Jan.3rd, 1868 burned down almost everything in the region including our sake brewery. With great hopes and tremendous efforts of the people, Yamamoto Honke rebuilt the brewery within the same year. 本社社屋

1926 Since Fushimi was geographically located inland, it was only after the development of transportation in the Meiji period (1868-1912) that the region’s sake became famous and marked its name throughout Japan. Determinedly, Yamamoto Honke extended the market in Tokyo area with its premier brand, Shinsei.

1940 9th generation Genbee Yamamoto was well known for his talents and profound interests in Sado (Japanese Tea Ceremony) and Waka (Japanese poetry) and associated deeply with Tomioka Tessai, one of the most famous Japanese artists of the Nihonga style. In celebrating Genbee’s marriage, Tomioka Tessai took his brush and wrote “Shinsei” letters to give as a wedding gift. Today, the letters are used as Shinsei Label.

*Shiragikui holds its original tale: For days and weeks villagers suffered from severe draught and many crops were ruined. So one day a young villager goes into the mountain to seek for solution and as he went he ran into an old wizard and begged for help. The good wizard who loved nurturing white chrysanthemum sympathized with the villagers. The wizard went back to the village with the young man and took out a chrysanthemum and tilted slightly that one single drip from the petal fell on the ground. In a blink of an eye, clear water sprang from the dry land and with seconds, the region was enriched with water from chrysanthemum.
